It is argued that history has little relevance in today’s fast-paced, technology-driven world, while others believe it remains essential for learning from past mistakes. I strongly support the view that history is indispensable for progress.

On one hand, those who dismiss history’s importance argue that the modern world faces unique challenges, such as climate change, artificial intelligence, and global pandemics, that past generations never encountered. They claim that studying history is a waste of time when innovation and forward-thinking are prioritised. For example, a tech entrepreneur might argue that understanding ancient civilisations does little to help develop new software or renewable energy solutions.

On the other hand, history provides invaluable lessons that guide present and future decisions. Societies that ignore past mistakes often repeat them. For instance, economic crises like the Great Depression (1929) and the 2008 financial crash share similarities, and studying them helps policymakers avoid reckless financial practices. Additionally, history fosters cultural identity and unity. Nations that remember their struggles, such as India’s independence movement or the civil rights movement in the U.S., draw strength from their past to build a more just society.

In my opinion, history is crucial for progress because it shapes critical thinking, ethical decision-making, and societal progress. Without understanding past wars, political conflicts, and social movements, humanity would lack the wisdom to navigate present challenges. For example, the lessons from World War II underscore the dangers of unchecked nationalism and propaganda, which remain relevant today.
