Linking Words

1. Addition

Linking Words: and, also, moreover, furthermore, in addition
Synonyms: plus, additionally, as well
Example:

  • She is intelligent and hardworking.

2. Contrast

Linking Words: but, however, although, though, whereas, while
Synonyms: yet, nevertheless, on the other hand
Example:

3. Cause and Effect

Linking Words: because, so, therefore, thus, as a result
Synonyms: hence, due to this
Example:

Synonyms: in the same way, equally

Example:

8. Emphasis

Linking Words: indeed, in fact, above all

Example:

9. Condition

Linking Words: if, unless, provided that

Example:

10. Time

Linking Words: when, while, before, after, during

Example:

Usage Tips:

Formal writing: Moreover, consequently, nevertheless, subsequently
Informal speaking: So, but, and, also, then
