Gap Year (Pros and Cons)

Some young people like to take a gap year before going on to university. Others prefer to begin their university studies immediately after finishing secondary school. What are the advantages and disadvantages of taking a gap year?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

(Taking a gap year means taking a year off between high school and university to travel or work)

It is observed that some high school graduates indulge in a year long travel or work before pursuing higher education. Some key advantages of this include gaining exposure and developing new skills, but on the downside, it poses a risk of discontinuation of studies.

Taking a break from studies after finishing secondary education can prove beneficial in quite a few ways. Firstly, by travelling and working part-time jobs, these young individuals get themselves exposed to the actual working environment and gain practical knowledge. In other words, the exposure gained by doing so leads not only to better understanding of the theoretical knowledge acquired in the past, but also contributes to the development of certain skills required to face challenges in the future. For instance, some countries such as Azerbaijan, encourage high school graduates to take part in community service before joining a university. This is done to provide hands on experience and to give a flavor of the real working conditions.

The disadvantages of the gap year include a threat to higher studies of the individual. Some students are eager to work and start at an entry level positions in the fields of their interest during the gap year. However, at times either because of the inclination towards the job or the financial benefits, these former students do not resume higher studies and jeopardize their education. Hence, their career growth is hindered because of their lack of education. In fact, I have come across a few brilliant individuals who are now forced to work minimum wage jobs only because they did not resume their university education after the gap year. Therefore, it can be said that this break between the studies might cause permanent disruption of studies in some cases.

To conclude, the gap year before starting university can be beneficial in gaining practical knowledge and developing new skills but on the other hand there is a risk that some high school graduates will not join a university at all.
