Local Shop vs Malls/Supermarkets (Positive or Negative Development)

In recent years, many small local shops have closed because customers travel to large shopping centers of malls to do their shopping

Is this a positive or negative development?

It has been observed that several local retail outlets are going out of business as malls are gaining more and more traction. I believe it is a negative development as it puts people out of job and causes socio-economic issues.

With the shopping complexes attracting more and more customers every year, small scale retailers are losing business. This is causing local shops being closed and as a result unemployment is on the rise in several communities. This decline in business activities and the rise in unemployment is a leading cause of unrest in a locality. With more people struggling to survive due to financial constraints, crime rate is also increasing which could become a major problem to deal with. A good example of such situation would be of a French town called Lille, where in 2016, soon after the opening of a large multinational shopping center, unemployment, and crime rate both increased.

Another factor, when it comes to this shift in shopping trends, is the improper distribution of money in the society. Majority of retail outlets in the large shopping stores are often a part of international chains. Therefore, the revenue generated by these corporate giants is often sent to the country of origin. This way, not the host country, local businesses and banks are deprived of the financial and economic benefits of the money being spent. For instance, a major retail store Carrefour, being a French company, routes all the sales revenue to their banks in France, on the other hand the cash flow of local vendors remain within the society. Hence, in this way the local businesses, economy and also the community can flourish.

To conclude, in my opinion, the closure of small scaled businesses due to the public’s increasing interest in large scale shopping malls is a negative impact as it is causing unemployment and imbalanced flow of money.
