Parenting (Two-Part Questions)
Some parents buy their children whatever they ask for, and allow their children to do whatever they want. Is this a good way to raise children? What consequences could this style of parenting have for children as they get older?
It is observed that a few families give their children a free hand by providing them whatever they demand and letting them do whatever they wish. This might not be considered a suitable upbringing style as when these children grow up, they are a misfit in the society.
Parenting is a challenging task and suitable techniques are required to do so, as the consequences can affect future generations. Some parents are found to be strict towards their children and some do not seem to care. The key to raising children well is in having a balanced approach. It is a parent’s responsibility to teach their off-springs about what is right and what is wrong. Also, when it comes to fulfilling a child’s wishes, parents must know when to refuse and when to agree. Therefore, it is often required to say “NO” to children for their betterment. Hence, giving children the free hand to have everything and do anything is not the right approach.
When children are not used to of being stopped in doing something or being refused in getting their wishes fulfilled, they expect the same to happen after growing up. Although that is not how the world works. As grownups, these individuals are known to have a hard time adjusting in the society. In other words, they find it difficult to adapt to the real life with their false expectations, spoiled nature and impractical approaches. This results in severe personal life problems such as depression, addictions and engagement in crimes. For example, a friend of mine in high school was famous for being spoilt by such upbringing style, and a few years into his adulthood he became depressed due to adaptability issues, and sadly ended up becoming a drug addict. Therefore, this parenting mistake can have harsh consequences on the future of the children.
To conclude, buying children whatever they wish for and not stopping them from doing anything even if it is wrong is not a good parenting approach and it can have severely negative impact on these children’s futures.
