Working Hard (Two-Part Question)

In education and employment, some people work harder than others. Why do some people work harder? Is it always a good thing to work hard?

It is often found that some people tend to work harder as compared to others in order to succeed in their academic and professional goals. Since every person is unique, and the environment they are in also vary, working hard sometimes becomes an only option. Although, at times, working smart is what is required instead of working hard.

Each of us are different from one another in terms of personal traits and are facing unique types of challenges. This is to say that, when it comes to task achievement either as a student or an employee, some people lack in intelligence, a few might not be well experienced, and others might not have prior knowledge in field. Hence, in order to accomplish their goals, these individuals have to deal with their shortcomings by working harder as compared to others. For example management trainees are observed to be working harder than senior managers. Another factor in this case is the work environment, as some educational institutions over burden students with assignments, and various corporate sectors, such as mining and construction, also try to manage with limited manpower causing employees to work harder than usual.

In the last decade, working hard is actually being discouraged and a new terminology “working smart” is being introduced. It is believed that by learning new skills, adapting to change, properly utilizing resources, and efficiently managing time an individual can achieve desired results without working hard. Another reason why hard work is not always considered a positive thing is because at times it sabotages personal life. For example, a student or a professional who works very hard either has a disturbed work-life balance or is extremely tired by the time he or she reaches back home and is incapable of giving quality time to family. Therefore, to boost efficiencies in the educational, personal and professional fields working smartly is considered better than working hard.

To conclude, some people have to work harder than others either due to their personal shortcomings or challenging study or work environment, but it is believed that it is not always the best thing to do as the world is evolving into a “working smart” culture.
